Lake Mead holds 26.1 million acre-feet of water at full capacity, making it the largest reservoir in the United States by volume. Formed in 1935 when Hoover Dam impounded the Colorado River, the reservoir stretches 112 miles upstream and covers 247 square miles when full.
Bureau of Reclamation engineers designed the dam to provide flood control and hydroelectric power for the Southwest, but the resulting lake transformed Nevada's arid landscape into a year-round recreation zone.
The reservoir's significance extends beyond engineering. Beneath its surface lie remnants of early Mormon settlements, including St. Thomas, a town founded in 1865 and abandoned in 1938 as rising waters approached. Prolonged drought has exposed sections of the old townsite since 2002, revealing foundations, walls, and artifacts from pioneer life. The lake's dramatic water-level fluctuations—dropping more than 170 feet from its 2000 high—have created a visible white bathtub ring on surrounding cliffs, a stark record of the Colorado River Basin's hydrological pressures.
Boat access centers on Boulder Basin, the reservoir's westernmost arm, where marinas operate within sight of Hoover Dam's concrete arch. The paddlewheeler Desert Princess, a three-deck sternwheeler measuring 300 feet, departs from Hemenway Harbor and navigates the basin's deep channels. Cruises pass within 900 feet of the dam's downstream face, offering perspectives on its 726-foot height and Art Deco intake towers. Black Canyon's volcanic walls rise directly from the water, compressed into narrow passages downstream of the dam. Lake Mead boat ride tours combine lake and canyon segments, framing Hoover Dam against its geological context.
The National Recreation Area encompasses 1.5 million acres across Nevada and Arizona. Rocky ridges, Joshua tree forests, and bighorn sheep habitat surround the reservoir. Summer surface temperatures exceed 80 degrees Fahrenheit, while winter conditions allow comfortable cruising. The lake's multiple basins—Boulder, Virgin, Temple, and Gregg—each carry distinct topography, but Boulder Basin remains the primary departure point for commercial vessels due to proximity to Las Vegas, 30 miles northwest.
